SHAHEDNEWS: The florist-approved tricks that help cut flowers last longer at home.

According to SHAHEDNEWS, Alina Rollinson loves playing with flowers.

The owner of Fleur&Co in Auckland’s City Works Depot is on a mission to help others enjoy them in more ways than just a bunch in a bouquet.

Alina is a fully trained florist who offers a range of thoughtfully-designed modern florals. However, her business has really taken off since she embraced encouraging others to ‘play’ with blooms, too.

She runs a range of flower workshops, including popular Bloom & Sip, and Bloom & Brew options, where a group lesson is accompanied by a glass of wine or tea and coffee. Flower workshop classes include hand-tied bouquet making, modern vase arrangements, Ikebana, preserved flower design and seasonal floral styling, popular with friend groups and for occasions like birthdays and hen’s dos.

Having recently enjoyed a two hour Ikebana session at Fleur&Co, we can attest it was one of the most enjoyable, relaxing and interesting things we’ve done in a while. We loved the way Alina was brimming with useful tips for flower styling and care.

The floral stylist’s infectious enthusiasm extends to every bloom, from simple market-garden stems and native greenery to luxe cultivated varieties.

Here, Alina shares some tips on how to select spring blooms and help them last at home.

What should we look for when selecting loose flowers?

Choosing fresh flowers can feel tricky at first, but there are a few simple things to look for.

First, don’t just look at the blooms—check the stems and leaves. Healthy flowers should have green, firm, crisp leaves with no yellowing or spots. The stems should look fresh and hydrated.

Next, have a closer look at the petals. They should feel firm rather than papery, with no curling or wilting. Depending on the flower, some blooms are best bought closed (like lilies), while others can be more open (like tulips), but they should always look fresh and hydrated.

And here’s my favourite tip for roses: gently squeeze the base of the bloom where the petals meet the stem. A fresh rose will feel nice and firm, while an older rose will feel soft and give easily (with some garden roses being an exception).

The more you do this, the better you’ll get at spotting fresh flowers in just a few seconds.

What flowers do you love for spring?

Over the next couple of months, I’m especially looking forward to flowers like snapdragons, tulips and the first of the ranunculus coming into season. It’s a bit of a transition period, so there’s not lots of beautiful variety starting to appear.

Just a reminder, that for our part of the world, this is the best times of the year to enjoy fresh flowers. The cooler weather naturally helps flowers last much longer, making it the perfect season to play with different varieties and enjoy them in your home.

A modern styling tip to share?

If you’re after a more modern look, my biggest tip is to keep it simple. Instead of mixing lots of different flowers into one arrangement, try using just one variety per vase without greenery. Group three different vases together, each with a different flower, shape and height. It’s a really effortless way to create a stylish, contemporary look.

How can we help flowers last at home?

The biggest tip for making your flowers last longer is actually a really simple one: always recut the stems before putting them in water. Even the freshest flowers won’t hydrate properly if the stems aren’t freshly cut. In Japan, it’s even common to cut stems under water, which is a lovely technique, but simply giving them a fresh cut before they go into the vase will make a big difference.

Next, remove most of the leaves from the stems, especially any that would sit below the waterline. This helps the flowers direct their energy to the blooms and prevents bacteria from building up in the water.

A clean vase is just as important. Don’t just top up the water—wash the vase with detergent before refilling it with fresh water. Then, every couple of days, change the water, wash the vase again, and give the stems another fresh trim.

If you have professional flower food, that’s great. But if you don’t, don’t worry. In my experience, regularly changing the water and recutting the stems every couple of days is more than enough to keep your flowers looking beautiful for longer.
