Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: The Incredible Details Hidden Behind Its White Marble Walls

According to SHAHEDNEWS, The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and is the largest mosque in the country. It is one of Abu Dhabi’s most prominent landmarks and serves as an important place of worship as well as a major cultural and visitor destination. According to Wikipedia, construction began in 1996 and the mosque was completed in 2007, with its internal prayer halls opening for worship in December of that year.

The mosque was conceived by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the UAE. His vision was to create a mosque that would bring together different traditions of Islamic architecture and reflect both historical and modern artistic values. Sheikh Zayed died in 2004 and was buried in the mosque complex.

Architecturally, the mosque combines influences from several Islamic traditions, including Persian, Mughal, Indo-Islamic and Moroccan styles. The complex features 82 domes of seven different sizes and four large minarets. Its exterior is dominated by white marble, while the courtyard is decorated with elaborate floral marble mosaics. The Qibla wall features the 99 names and attributes of Allah written in traditional Kufic calligraphy.

The mosque can accommodate more than 40,000 worshippers, while its main prayer hall can hold more than 7,000 people. Its four minarets rise to roughly 104–107 metres, and the vast central courtyard covers around 17,000 square metres. The mosque’s main axis is also oriented toward the Kaaba in Mecca, reflecting its function as a place of Islamic worship.
